The Perfect Pair -Chiropractic and Pregnancy-

Do you know someone that is pregnant or are you currently pregnant?

There are endless amounts of benefits for a mother being under chiropractic care throughout her pregnancy. Did you know that over 50% of pregnant women experience back pain during their pregnancy? Taking medications, even over-the-counter medications, are not recommended because they cross the placenta and enter the baby's blood stream. A study published in the Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine followed 25,000 British children and their mothers. The results from this study found that women who take antibiotics during pregnancy are more likely to have a child with an allergy-related condition such as asthma, eczema, or hay fever compared to women who do not take medication during pregnancy.

The safe, effective alternative for these aches, pains and/or colds during pregnancy is chiropractic care. The adjustments are modified to accommodate the mother's growing belly and studies have shown chiropractic to be safe for both the mother and the unborn child. A well functioning nervous system enables a mother to easily combat many of the hurdles of pregnancy. The nervous system is made up of your brain, spinal cord and a network of nerves that go to every structure and organ in your body. The spinal cord is protected by the bones in your back, called vertebrae, and the nerves branch out from the spinal cord and come out in-between these bones. If a bone moves out of place it affects the nerves and structures around the area and this is called a subluxation. A subluxation can happen to anyone but it is especially common in pregnant women because the biomechanics of how they move and function changes dramatically during a pregnancy. A chiropractic adjustment gently puts the bones back in place and creates balance again in the nervous system. The nervous system controls everything in the body so having this balance is vital for every function.

Chiropractic care also has exceptional results for labor and delivery. Studies show a significant reduction in labor time for those women who had chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy. First time mothers averaged a 24% reduction in labor time and experienced mothers enjoyed a 39% reduction in labor time. In another study that incorporated chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy there was a 50% decrease in the need for painkillers during delivery. Have you ever heard of a Breech baby before? This means the baby is head up when it is supposed to be head down for the delivery. There is special chiropractic technique called Webster technique that has a reported 82% success rate of reversing Breech babies! This technique uses chiropractic adjustments with trigger point therapy to untwist the pelvis which opens up the uterus for the baby to turn by itself. Having the baby in the correct birthing position is very important because if a baby is Breech a c-section is most commonly recommended. Also having regular chiropractic care throughout a woman's pregnancy has been shown to reduce the baby being Breech because the woman's pelvis is balanced and in the correct position for delivery.

As you can see pregnancy and chiropractic go hand in hand. If you are currently pregnant or know someone that is pregnant take a moment to share this important information with them. 1. Your chiropractor may also give you some therapeutic exercises to help speed your healing process and may suggest massage therapy to help alleviate muscle tension. Follow his advice and instructions exactly, as doing more or straining yourself could result in further injury and discomfort during your healing process.
